Hobo With A Shotgun – Commentary

Last night I decided to watch Hobo With A Shotgun starring Rutget Hauer (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1640459/). It’s one of those films I’ve seen on the shelf in the shops for a while now and wanted to watch but didn’t want to pay £15 for. Turns out it’s available on Netflix. Problem solved.

Almost as soon as it started I realised it wasn’t quite the film I was expecting. While there is a Hobo, and he does indeed get a shotgun, the violence and gore level were much higher and a little more comedic than I anticipated. It was at this point I decided it might be fun to do a Twitter commentary while I was watching it so people following me could gain some insight into the film. This is a concept I stole from One-Armed Freddy. He’s done a handful of similar commentaries on Facebook in the past.

Anyway, enough babbling, here’s the commentary:

As you can see I didn’t go over board with the posts. I kept it simple and kept them to a minimum, not wanting to fill up people’s timelines with this nonsense. Regardless, I had fun doing it, and at least 3 people enjoyed reading it. I may do another in the future, I may not – I had no intention of doing this one until 4 minutes into the film.

Bye.

I used to be a cyclist…

It occurred to me last night that, although I still include ‘Mountain Biking’ in the “Interests/About Me” section of any profile I create, I haven’t actually ridden my bike this year. The last time I rode anywhere was 29/12/11.

The list of excuses I use to reassure myself that I’m still a cyclist range from ‘disrupted sleeping patterns causing me not to get up in time’ to ‘not having appropriate clothing’.

To be perfectly honest they’re all nonsense. The truth of it is I’m lazy and I have no will power.

Instead of going to sleep at a reasonable time in order to wake up at a reasonable time, I stay up late staring at the TV watching old episodes of Skins or some terrible film on Netflix. As my last post suggests, I don’t even stay up all night playing video games anymore – the other ‘Interest’ I put on every profile page. On top of this I find it all too easy to look outside, see a puddle, drop of rain or gust of wind and think “I’ll take the car”.

So, last night at around 11pm, instead of putting another episode of Skins on I swtiched everything off, said goodnight to Twitter and shut my eyes. Aside from a couple of brief moments in the night where I woke up, I had over 8 hours sleep and I woke up with plenty of time to get the bike out and start pedalling the (boring) 7 miles to work.

Apart from realising my new jeans are in no way suitable for cycling, and apart from the headache I suddenly had going on, I successfully rode my bike all the way to work, and got there on time!

I was tired. Probably due to having no decent amount of excersise in 4 weeks. And I was suffering a small amount of discomfort thanks to my jeans (details not required, use your imagination). But other than that I got there. I just need to get back home now…

I am a cyclist once more.

I used to be a gamer…

I’ve either lost my desire to play video games or I’ve spoilt myself for choice to the point where I don’t know where to start..

For the last couple of weeks, most evenings, I’ve switched my Xbox on and instead of playing a game I’ve just fired up Netflix or LoveFilm and scoured the listings unitl I’ve found something worth killing 2 or 3 hours of my evening with, after which I feel like I’ve acomplished less than nothing. At least if I’d played a game I might have unlocked an achievement and upped my gamer score a tad..

I think the problem is the current list of games I’ve got on the go..

There’s Forza 4, which I still think is a fantastic game but now I’m in the later stages of the career (9th year I believe) I know I need to give it maximum attention in order to get through even a single race without trouble.

Then there’s Skyrim, which I haven’t even played yet this year.. I’m something like level 15 and I’ve got so many quests on the go I’ve lost all track of where I need to go and which story arc I want to follow.

Battlefield 3 is up next, but in all honesty I only bought that for the online element becuase I had a handful of friends who were playing it and I felt left out, so that’ll just get popped in the tray next time one of them texts or tweets inviting me to join in the fun.

Portal 2 has been in my posession for weeks now and is still in the wrapper. No real reason other than I bought it because I felt it’s a game I should have played by now and it went in a sale. I think it’s something I’ll play once I’ve crossed a couple of the others off the list.

Assasin’s Creed: Brotherhood. Yes, Brotherhood. Not Revelations, Brotherhood. I’m a little behind on that series to say the least. I love the idea of the Assassin’s Creed games, and I love the Insert Coin hoodies but everytime I start playing I get confused/frustrated/bored and then everytime shortly after when I think “I’ll play some AC” I remember that confused/frustrated/bored feeling I had last time, so I immediately dismiss it.

Finally, there’s Rage. I’ve only just got my hands on this and it was basiclly because a friend pointed out that Gameplay.co.uk were dishing it out for a tenner. I’ve put about 2 hours into it so far and while it’s certainly one of the best looking games I’ve seen, it hasn’t sucked me in…

There we have it. Rant over. One day this list will be checked off, and no doubt have been replaced by another similar list. On that day I’ll probably copy and paste this colection of words and just replace a few names here and there.

Now.. what else is on Netflix I haven’t seen yet?

1936 Calthorpe

This bike was on display at the Classic bike show held at Newark Showground on January 7th & 8th 2012.

I hope I look this good when I’m 75 years old! I didn’t make a note of the owner but will find out and update this post at some point.

The following text was lifted form the display board in front of the bike:

This motorcycle is one of only two known to have survived that particular year. Howerver this machine is the only one known to have survived that did away with the need for manual oil adjustment by replacing the regulator with a pressure release valve.

This machine also has the original early 1936 modified hand change fuel tank (modified because of the introduction of foot change)with the intrument panel in its centre (as seen in the early 1936 adds). Later models of that year and onwards had a different syle of fuel tank and headlight shell.

After undergoing a (3 year) extensive restoration, the end result is a beautiful original concours example of a machine that’s not just very rare and unique and impossible to replace, but more importantly is the best original working example of this particular machine in existence!

And not forgetting it’s also an important part of the evolution of British motorcycle histroy. And is testament to the small volume producers of that time.

Film, Film, Film tha Po-lice

B. Dolan and his good buddies Toki Wright, Jasiri X, Buddy Peace and Sage Francis have a new song called Film the Police that re-imagines the classic N.W.A track of similar name, and has lyrical content greatly inspired by the ‘talents’ of the Police Department across the United States, and no doubt many other parts of the world as well.

The video on YouTube has become incredibly popular too:

You can download the MP3 via the Strange Famous website.

I’ve never been a huge hip-hop fan but guys like B. Dolan and Scroobius Pip have inspired a new found fondness for it (as long as it’s not all eX to the Zee style).

3 things..

1) My excellent friend and occasional partner in crime (read: drinking) Graham has created a bloggy website to store his ramblings. You can find it at www.onearmedfreddy.co.uk

2) A few weeks ago I went to see Scroobius Pip do a gig. It was magnificent. I met the bloke and he was a thoroughly nice chap – picture below. He even signed a Red Shift Rebels cap that I purchased from his merchandise stand – picture below.

B. Dolan was supporting him and it turns out he’s also magnificent and thoroughly nice. He signed a copy if his tour cd – picture below.

3) I’m using the wordpress app for android to write this. Exciting living in the future isn’t it?

Edit: I had to use the website version to amend multiple spelling mistakes and poor layout of images.

Exciting things that happened today

1) Remembered I had this site/blog/nonsense.

2) Received my physical copy of Big Black Delta‘s BBDLP1 in the post today. It’s even signed, which is super awesomesauce. Brilliant album. IFUCKINGLOVEYOU is still my favourite track of his so far; no messing around, just straight in there with the noise!

3) Player Gears of War 3 co-op.
